Smarter appliance comparison thanks to the Realyse project, 10.6.2014
In the BFE project Realyse, we explore the performances of electronic devices with the "fingerprint" technology NILM (Non Intrusive Load Monitoring).
It shows the consumer how much energy his unit consumes in comparison with the most efficient equipment on the website "Topten.ch".
So, the consumer will have a tool with which he can easily identify energy guzzlers and then replace them with more efficient appliances.
Smart energy management with Demand-Response.ch, 10.6.2014
Within the scope of Demand-Response.ch, we are exploring how we can best meet the changing conditions of the future energy market together with the Federal Office for Energy, Siemens Schweiz AG, BKW Energie AG, swissgrid, and MeteoSwiss.
In the future, the amount of electricity available will vary considerably in line with the weather as a result of the increased use of renewable energy sources. Our smart technology and the new concepts help to move the running of devices into a period that is more favourable in terms of lower electricity tariffs and when the power grid is off-peak - all this without any loss of comfort or convenience.
The first work packages were recently completed. We are currently evaluating service buildings that are suitable for a pilot installation.

Publication of our german Version of the Comicbook about the Internet of Things (aka Internet of Everything, M2M), 17.4.2014
"What exactly is the Internet of Things (aka IoT, Internet der Dinge, Internet of Everything, M2M)"? Here at the iHomeLab, we were asked this question very often in the past.
Even for us, being the Swiss competence centre for IoT in buildings, giving a brief answer was not easy. Even after having done research on sensors and networked devices for more than 15 years. There are just too many application areas and scenarios for networked objects.
To make people understand, what IoT is all about, we have together with the Alexandra Institute from Denmark, translated and issued a German Version of the so called "IoT Comicbook", originally issued in English. The Comicbook explains based on 25 Stories and Scenarios, how the Internet of Things can help to make our lives easier in the future.
Take a look inside and enjoy by clicking on the title page below (for German) or go to the original version in English.
iHomeLab co-organizer of the Intensive Programme "Internet of Things " in Amsterdam, 03/24 - 04/04/2014
"The IP IoT was an opportunity to gain experience in international teams. Moreover, I was able to use and improve my English skills. " (Adrian Buchmann, HSLU)
The iHomeLab organized a 2 -week intensive program for talented and interested students about the “Internet of Things” together with six other universities. In the interdisciplinary course, the students were supposed, after a theoretical part, to develop a "Smart Device" (networked and equipped with sensors), which communicates with the Internet.
Aliaksei Andrushevich , Senior Researcher at iHomeLab not only helped to designed the course actively and lectured but he also oversaw the group of five students from the University of Lucerne , which were able to participate in the free study tour on behalf of the iHomeLab .
Impressions of Amsterdam
The two weeks of the course included a theoretical part, where the participants were taught topics such as Creativity techniques, requirements analysis , user requirements , business administration, acceptance, business requirements or rapid prototyping. In Addition, the were able to join workshops for sensor technologies , mobile development but also woodworking, etc..
In the practical part, mixed teams were formed consisting of different nationalities, fields of study and gender . The team developed a "Smart Device", which simplifies a problem from everyday life thanks to IoT technology. They emerged at the same time clever and useful concepts, for example
- an intelligent street lighting
- To wear " Forget me Not" , an application helps the important things close at hand
- a system for the tracking of parcel deliveries
- and many more
For the iHomeLab, to organize this international seminar was an exciting opportunity to strengthen its position as a leading research institution for IoT in buildings. In addition, talented students of the Lucerne University could be promoted in a leading edge field, thanks to the five sponsored study places .
This is what the participants of the University of Lucerne think about the programme:
Christian Schlatter: „The IP IoT gave me the opportunity to deepen my knowledge in exciting areas such as creativity techniques and prototyping. In addition, I was able to improve my English skills and work across disciplines".
Adrian Buchmann: "The IP IoT was an opportunity to gain experience in international teams . Moreover, I was able to use and improve my English skills. "

iSENS Inactivity Sensor wins the Innovation Award of the Swiss Association of SME!, 08/20/2013
This year for the first Time, the Swiss SME Association together with Idée Suisse Suisse EMEX and the StartUp college arranged competition to award companies that have distinguished themselves by a special innovation.
The iHomeLab engineers have developed for and with the company Poly Project GmbH in Zollikofen an inactivity-sensor "iSENS". It recognizes "non-activity" in an apartment and triggers an alarm after a certain time.
The sensor closes a gap in conventional alarm systems: very often no alarm can be triggered manually due to loss of consciousness (eg with the known alarm buttons).
The company Poly project already offers a system which has seven different alarm options. The iSENS fits into this system and adds a function that is so far not covered by any competitive system.
Relevant criteria for the awards were the degree of innovation and market opportunities and innovation management at the concept.
Apparently the sensor iSENS was on these points the most convincing to the jury.
The iHomeLab and especially the project team are proud that our research works is being appreciated in the Market!

Lecture Series for "care and support of people with dementia," Gossau, 13/06/2013
Rolf Kistler holds a lecture titled "Nie mehr alleine unterwegs: Technologie, die Menschen verbindet." on 13.6. at 19.00 clock.
There are more older people who are looked after and cared for by fewer and fewer younger people. Is it possible that we will use our technical progress to support these people in their daily lives? To make it so, to enable them to live longer independent in their familiar surroundings?
Can we help carers and relatives by assistance systems to give them phisical and mental reliev, so that they can increasingly focus on the actual care itself? Where are we today and how could such - as unobtrusive and easy to use - services help in the future?
The field of "AAL (Ambient Assisted Living)" researches exactly these issues. In a brief introduction and using concrete examples of projects Rolf Kistler would like to give some answers with this lecture.
The presentation is here available for download.

1st international Internet of Things Day on April 9th 2013
When back in 1999 scientists started to think about the Internet of Things, the idea was to not only connect people through the Internet but every single thing in this world.
Internet of Things is moving fast and getting real. Every thing to be connected to every thing, surely science fiction, or some strange engineering dream? It just does not seem so unreal now, as IoT is moving from hype to market. Today you can buy e.g. an irrigation detector for plants, which is connected and communicates to the internet.
Still, it is relatively unknown. If you are working somewhere, anywhere - you will see a little bit more connectivity in every part of your job. New clients seem to appear quicker and from different directions. You are beginning to wonder if your product will be the same in three years? What services will you be offering in two? What will Internet of Things mean for you?
The event was a big success and was fully booked.
You can look at the pictures in the gallery.

New CTI funded Project "Neutun"
We are very pleased that our research project "NEUTUN" (Non-intrusive real-time monitoring of power transformers of lower power levels) was accepted by the federal Commission for Technology and Innovation “CTI”. The project is in our research field of Energy Efficiency and is based on our NIALM Technology.
The development of new renewable energy (NEE) leads to high stress, and impact on all network levels. Particularly affected are the transformers of the lowest network level, they form the final link in the energy supply chain. Until now, there is no cost-effective method for assessing the condition of these transformers.
NEUTUN will explore a method for an accurate assessment of the remaining life of these transformers with low-cost devices. These residual life is heavily depending on the operating temperature. In this research project, the operating temperature will be calculated by current and voltage analysis and thus determines the life of the transformer. The method is tested with simulation data in a demonstrator.
NEUTUN starts in March 2013 and has a term of 18 months.

New CTI funded Project in the Field of the Internet of Things, 31.5.2012
The Ambient Assisted Living Research focusses on technical aids for elderly people to help them to live longer save and secure at home. Todays solutions, like sensors or end user devices should be connected to the environnemen in a secure, reliable and cost efficient way. Today, the common connection for these devices ist established over telephone or the internet. Experience shows, that only minor problems such as a handset that is not correctly hung up, can cut off the alerting.
In Practise, the project focusses on the research and development of a hard- and software-architecture for a wireless, battery powered and cost efficient communication module. The module needs to meet very high encryption standards in order to secure the privacy of indivdiuals.
The main goal is to combine the synergic potential of the research in Ambient Assisted Living and Energy Efficiency. This way, two of our main research fields, that have been worked on individually, are now combined for the first time. This shows, that our research strategy points in the right direction.

New Services at iHomeLab: Assesments for the "POM" Guarantee-Mark(26.3.2012)
iHomeLab has been intrduced as the certification centre for the POM (Peace of Mind) Label of Saia-Burgess.
The aim of Peace of Mind tendering is to systematically minimize potential trouble, worries and overall costs across a full life cycle of over 15 years. The aim is to verify and evaluate the extent to which Peace Of Mind specifications from a tender have in fact been realized in the implementation phase.
iHomeLab will be the first organization in Switzerland that is allowed to test and assess building automation solutions according to Peace Of Mind rules with complete independence and neutrality.
Depending on the results of assessment, bronze, silver or gold test plaques are awarded, along with the standardized test report. This means that the quality of a building automation solution can be documented not only in the building’s technical documentation, but also in the visible technical area. This test and assessment system applies equally to all the usual makes of automation technology on the market. Alongside new projects, the current stock of a system can also be inspected.
Are you intersted in a Certification? Peter Kronenberg can give you detailed information (info(at)iHomeLab.ch).

5. AAL congress, 24. – 25.1.2012, Berlin
On 24. - 25. January 2012 the 5th German AAL-Congress focuses on engineering for a self-determined life. Engineering has to be supporting in every situation of life: from daily business to social life up to mobility.
The congress is organized by BMBF and VDE for the fifth time. The AAL congress was promoted in the past years to the indicator congress in the innovationfield "age-based assisted systems".
After we were assigned with the "elderly person award" last year, we will be also joining the congress this year.
We will present a Paper and a Poster with the Title: Building Intelligence and Human Service Infrastructures as Enabler for Self-Determined Living in the Old Age.
This paper focuses on applications of Building Intelligence (BI) in combination with a network of human carers as a common basis for a self-determined and independent living for elderly people. After a short introduction and the definition of the problem statement we describe our proposed solution. It bases on a technical infrastructure which on the one hand consists of an infrastructure for direct assistance at home including a user-driven interaction and training frame-work. A key role of the proposed concept plays a service network of human helpers who are directly included into the system and provide their services context sensitively depending on the end user’s needs. This is the reason why on the other hand the home infrastructure is connected to a cloud based platform for case management and the involvement of care-giving stakeholders. A novelty is that besides caring professionals, relatives and volunteers also providers with existing service infrastructures are involved (infrastructure reuse). Goal of the overall, user-centric solution is the improvement of the elderly’s self-determination while guaranteeing an optimal skill-grade mix of the helpers. At the end of the paper we refer to the related work in the field and discuss the results and future directions of our research.
Interested? Visit us at our stand (Berlin Congress Center, stand 34).
